Meet Your Certified Nurse Midwife

Serving Charlottesville, Richmond and surrounding areas

Hello and welcome! I'm Kelly, a new nurse-midwife excited to offer home birth and women’s health services in Virginia!

My passion for midwifery began at a young age. My favorite TV show was TLC’s A Baby Story, and my mentor in high school was a Labor & Delivery nurse. When I shadowed her, I knew nursing school was my path.

Soon after I graduated nursing school, my husband joined the Army, and we moved 12 hours away from our support system of family and friends. Our first daughter was born a few months later, and I was unprepared for the challenges of labor, birth, and postpartum. Though I achieved the unmedicated birth I was hoping for, I was left with a sense of frustration that I had to fight for my choices when they didn’t align with hospital policies.

I went on to begin a career in Labor & Delivery and Postpartum nursing. I championed my patients' wishes and did everything in my power to ensure they had fantastic labor, birth, and postpartum experiences. But I knew that nursing wouldn’t be my forever path. I knew one day I’d go back to school to become a midwife.

My husband and I continued to grow our family, and with each pregnancy, my desire to have a home birth grew stronger. Time and again, I was disappointed during prenatal care that my values didn’t align with my care provider’s. I rarely felt encouraged to explore all my options and choose the right one for me and my baby. It wasn’t until I found myself pregnant with baby #5 in the middle of the pandemic that my husband and I began to seriously consider home birth.

Home birth was a life-changing experience for me: I birthed my son while squatting next to my bed, into my husband’s hands, with my two daughters by my side. I snuggled into my own bed skin-to-skin with my baby afterward. I had another home water birth with my sixth, and this time, my daughters caught their new brother. I didn’t expect home birth to be much different from an unmedicated hospital birth, but the differences blew me away! One of my favorite parts is not having to drive anywhere during labor—"car”tractions are the worst!

My husband recently ended his career with the Army to coincide with my graduation from midwifery school, and we chose to land in Virginia so I could join Genesis Midwifery. He will be a stay-at-home dad, supporting my midwifery career by holding down the fort when I’m called to a birth.

My midwifery approach is holistic, focusing on not only the physical aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, but also each family's emotional and spiritual needs. I strongly believe in the power of informed choice and aim to provide evidence-based information and personalized care, supporting women in making decisions that feel right for them and their families. My goal as a midwife is to create a warm, nurturing environment where women feel heard, respected, and supported. Thank you for considering me as your midwife. I would be honored to be a part of your birthing experience and support you in creating a positive and empowering start to your motherhood journey.
